Members of high-performing teams share a common vision, are outcome oriented, and have a high degree of mutual trust with and commitment to one another. These team members consistently engage in quality improvement. They are highly competent and empathic and have excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills. I apply strategies that I have successfully used with high-performance sports teams to develop high-performance executive teams. Team-building consultations can occur at different stages of team development. Through education, workshops, or retreats, a consultant can provide training to develop or enhance team skills, help the team articulate a vision and mission and set goals, assist teams in selecting job candidates with proven team skills, or foster team decision making.

Teams have become dominant forces in increasing productivity in the corporate world. The process of team development is dynamic; it requires shared power and authority, and its success is based on employee participation. A high degree of collaboration and cooperation is needed among team members to build successful teams. The consultant’s role is to identify the stage of team development the team is currently at and design specific personal, professional, or career goals, depending on the stage of the group.

Personal goals might include communicating more assertively, increasing self-awareness, relaxing, learning how to deal with “difficult” personality traits, overcoming procrastination, improving empathy skills, etc. Professional goals (related directly or indirectly to the job) might include effectively facilitating meetings, improving conflict management and resolution skills, terminating certain employees, developing strategic interviewing skills, etc. Career goals would likely be centered around work–life balance for employees, time management, work-stress management, enhancing requisite job skills, etc.
